For our next book club, we will be studying another Ancient Greek invention: the labyrinth. However, this one was created by Susanna Clarke rather than Daedalus, so it will be exquisitely weird and tantalising. Piranesi shows Clarke’s vast imaginative reach, but also her meticulous composure, and the world she builds seems to suck you in so quickly, you’d be forgiven for thinking it has its own gravitational pull. What starts off as weird gets weirder, and you slowly start to wonder whether Piranesi really is a custodian of the labyrinth, or a prisoner of it. If this genre-bending psychological maze (and winner of the Woman’s Prize for Fiction in 2021) seems like something for you, then join us!
