For our next book club, on 22 January at 20.30, we'll cover the debut book from the YouTube sensation Map Men, a British pair of cartography nerds that will have you in stitches while educating you about some of the worst maps in history. From Soviet maps that were a little wrong on purpose (they blamed Hitler’s initially successful invasion on their own mapmaking prowess), to maps that were spectacularly wrong by accident. You’ll read about the Mountains of Kong, which for decades in the 19th Century spanned the entire width of Africa–until they didn’t. Though their cheeky humor shines throughout, they also wax poetic about the beauty and usefulness of being lost in such a way that you’ll want to turn off your phone, break out a map, and hit the road.
