This month for book club, we’ll be doing the latest work from investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keefe, who is a staff writer for The New Yorker and is famous for his two previous works, Say Anything and Empire of Pain. The book follows Zac Brettler (2000 - 2019), who was already from a wealthy London family, but wanted to be part of the billionaire class. He was excellent at pretending, perhaps even too good. After his sudden death, his family found out that he was living a double life; some seriously dangerous people knew him as Zac Ismailov, son to a Russian oligarch who was on the verge of inheriting £205 million. Except the fortune didn’t exist and now people wanted to be paid. What ensues exposes London for what it is: a city where wealth can shield you from law and hitmen walk around with impunity.
